Wet season road closures have left residents of remote Queensland town Kowanyama struggling to access fresh food.

Images posted to Instagram by nurse Amy Ward show depleted shelves and steep prices in the Kowanyama General Store, operated by non-profit body Community Enterprise Queensland.

Ms Ward says the shortages have also caused health problems in the community, including increased rates of anaemia in children.

“My argument here is, Australian Indigenous people, their health is suffering majorly.

“And why are we not subsidizing their food, because this is a huge health crisis – they can’t even get the food,” she said.
